The best tools are the simplest

When typesetting, there is nothing that irritates more than pre-formatted text – that is, text that has been formatted in an email or other word processor, which invisibly carries its formatting, only to reappear at the most unwanted moment. Word is notorious for doing this. A seemingly benign chunk of copied-and-pasted text magically transforms itself into 14 pt fuchsia Comic Sans after one line-break too many.

However there is one built-in tool on my Mac that charmingly does all I need; strips text of its formatting, and without more than a Cmd + Shift + T is ready to be typeset into something more beautiful.

For me, the most underrated tool in design is TextEdit.
